Zingst, Baltic Sea

Zingst is a seaside resort on the pensinsula Fischland-Darß-Zingst at the baltic sea in Germany. Next to a modern pier with a touristic diving bell at its end, there is this old abandoned pier. Numerous groins left and right of the pier create a highlight for photographers at the beach, which is especially during the summer crowded by hundreds of tourists.

Molinos de Consuegra

The wind mills of Consuegra are located on a hill in the village Consuegra, in the middle of the Spanish region La Mancha, approx. 130 km south of Madrid. It is told that Cervantes was inspired by the buildings of the 16th century to his novel Don Quijote. In the book, the hero, together with his faithful squire Sancho Panza, is fighting against these windmills, which he believes are ferocious giants. I think, the dark developing of the photo actually converts the wind mills into giants, doesn't it?

Lighthouse Westerheversand

The famous lighthouse Westerheversand is one of the most frequently photographed lighthouses in Germany. The tower with a height of 40m is located 1km outside of the dike in Westerhever in Schleswig-Holstein, and can be seen from up to 40km from the seaside. The lighthouse is usually shown on postcards in bright colors on a sunny day with a blue sky. When I was visiting the location it was raining and very cloudy, so I decided to give it a try in dark black & white.

Glenfinnan Viaduct

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is located at the railway track from Fort Williams to Mallaig in the Scotish Highlands. A steam train is passing the monument two times per day. The train and the viaduct were used as filming location for Harry Potter movies. You can take the "Hogwarts Train" in Fort Williams. It is highly recommended to book well in advance. Photographers best take the "Glennfinnan Monument Parking". From there go back to the main street A830, turn right, and after having crossed the river after 200m again right. A public road leads under the viaduct. After crossing the monument, take the small path up the hill on the left hand side. From top you have the best view on the viaduct.

Capela dos Ossos

The Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos) is located in the rear courtyard of the Church "Igreja do Carmo" in Faro in Portugal. You can enter the chapel via the main church during regular visiting hours. It was built until 1816 by Carmelite monks using the bones and skulls of more than 1.200 monks, which they exhumed from the overcrowded cemetery. The inscription above the entrance says: "Pára aqui a considerar que a este estado hás-de chegar" (Stop here and consider that this state you will need to reach). The chapel has a macabre yet fascinating atmosphere. It was common practice in the 19th century to exhum bodies after 10 years to give place to bury the next generation. The exhumed bones were normally placed in tombs, the holy men however got a holy place for their final rest. The Capela dos Ossos is really a memorable place to be. Don't miss it when you travel to the Algarve.
