End of the seventies the German coal mining and steel industry was facing a severe structural crisis. Many mines and steel mills had to close business already beginning of the eighties. Later some of the abandoned coal mines and coking plants were converted into industry museums. The former coal mine Zeche Zollverein, the steel mill Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord oder the abandoned coal mine Zeche Ewald are only few examples. Photographers use these special locations for their photo shootings.

Abandoned Industry

Zeche Zollverein

Staircase to the museum "Ruhrmuseum" in the former coal washing plant of Zeche Zollverein in Essen.

Zeche Zollverein is an abandoned coal mine, which closed business in 1986. Nowadays it is used as industry museum, offering visitors a deep insight into the history of the industry location. The Ruhrmuseum is located in the abandoned coal washing plant of the former coal mine. A illuminated staircase is leading towards the entrance of the museum on 24 meter height. The photo was taken as long-exposure. Due to the lack of a tripod, I placed the camera on the floor in front of the staircase, taking advantage of a moment without visitors climbing the staircase, which explains the low perspective of the photo.

The industry park Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord is a open industry museum surrounding an abandoned steel mill in Duisburg-Meiderich. The former furnace can be climbed to a height of 70m. The area is used for recreation, e.g. for free-climbing. The wide area offers photographers lots of interesting locations for photo sessions.

Zeche Ewald

Winding Tower of "Schacht 7".

Zeche Ewald is an abandoned coal mine in Herten, Germany. Die coal mine (Zeche) closed business in 2000. The area was converted in the following years into an industrial estate, offering office space to numerous companies. In 2009 a travesty theatre opened doors in the former heat plant. Since 2013 German TV channel ARD broadcasts its sports show "Sportschau-Club" from a underground bar.
